Wishing you a delightful winter break with lots of time for Maker projects! News below…

6th Annual Piedmont School Maker Faire – Sunday, April 28, 11-3pm, Beach Elementary:
We are excited to announce the 2019 School Maker Faire date on May 5 and NEW location at Beach Elementary! Due to the S.T.E.A.M. building construction we need to relocate for the next couple years. Piedmont Makers are excited to welcome K-12 student and community members to submit projects!

Donate to Piedmont Makers as we take on the STEAM Expo!
If you have elementary school students, you may have read that the district has decided to eliminate support for the STEAM Expo (the tri-school event that showcases student interests and interdisciplinary explorations in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) this year. Makers firmly believe that student-driven inquiry is an important part of our students’ learning and growth and hope that the district will still be able to guide these experiences for all children, in the schools. We plan to incorporate the STEAM Expo into the Maker Faire this year but need your support to make it happen! Please visit donate.piedmontmakers.org to donate (and utilizing company matching) to help us put on even MORE amazing events in 2019.

Robotics Update:
Piedmont Makers and Scotbotics hosted the inaugural First Tech Challenge Tournament (FTC) in Morrison gym earlier this month. It was a huge success and a significant milestone for expanding robotics and STEAM education in Piedmont. With the growth in robotics competitions, more tournament hosts are needed. These tournaments require a lot of time to organize and volunteers (both technical and non technical) to run them. Piedmont was a great fit to run a tournament with our very engaged community and support from PUSD.

With the 2018-19 tournament season almost halfway over, 2 out of 6 FTC teams in Piedmont have qualified for Regionals in early March so far – Scotbotics and Hypercube. Pioneers and Zenith are entered in qualifying tournaments in January and February.

In FIRST Lego League, there are four teams advancing to regionals in January 16th at UC Berkeley. The teams are Team Green, Red Rockets, Technokitties, and Mission Woof. Teams are comprised of students from Beach, Wildwood, Havens, and Piedmont Middle School. Congratulations all!

Science Fair Documentary – Screening Opportunity:
Would you be interested in a community screening of The Science Fair? This Sundance award-winning documentary follows nine teenagers as they compete at The International Science and Engineering Fair. Email us at info@piedmontmakers.org for more info – if there is interest, we can arrange a showing and a community discussion on how Piedmont can continue to be a leader in STEAM education.
